Every Day We Fight: plan a safer approach to a Sentinel

PC · source-bounded Codex reference · Sources checked 2026-11-02

The short answer

The Sentinel reference says it gains a free Overwatch at the end of its turn. Check its active threat and line of fire before moving; use physically blocking cover or attack from a position you can reach safely. Its drone and shield state matter, especially for the Elite variant.

A long-range Rifter can threaten the next movement as well as the current position. Identify the Sentinel before moving the squad across an exposed lane.

Choose the next movement before starting it

  1. Identify the Sentinel and any visible current Overwatch or reaction feedback.
  2. Trace the line from its position to the intended destination. A cover label is not enough if the route crosses open fire.
  3. Use a position where actual geometry blocks the shot, or choose an attack that can address the threat without an exposed crossing.
  4. If targeting the drone, confirm the actual hit and destruction result before relying on a reduced threat.
  5. After each action, recheck the Sentinel and shields. Do not assume a previously damaged shield stays down.

Do not substitute an unverified bait trick

A Scramble can help a Thorn move under attack, but it is not invulnerability and may already be unavailable after another Reflex commitment. This guide does not promise that a single movement always consumes every enemy reaction or makes the rest of the squad safe.

The source does not supply one universal range, drone HP or guaranteed kill sequence. Adapt the approach to the line of fire and the defense state you can actually see.

If it does not work

  • A movement triggers a shot: recheck the route itself, not just cover at the destination.
  • The drone or Sentinel shield recovers: partial shield damage did not finish the defensive layer.
  • No safe crossing exists: spend the turn on a reachable shot or another supported action instead of forcing the lane.
  • A spent Reflex prevents Scramble: use the Overwatch/Reflex tradeoff guide.

How to tell it worked

The squad reaches a useful covered position or removes the identified threat, with the Sentinel's actual unit/reaction state checked before the next exposed movement.
