Every Day We Fight: check the angle when cover fails
Inspect the line from the attacking weapon to the body region being exposed. Reposition so solid geometry blocks that line, and recheck other enemies' angles. The cover reference does not promise a miss chance or invulnerability just because the character is beside an obstacle.
A Thorn can occupy a cover position and still be visible from the enemy's angle. The question is whether the obstruction blocks the actual path of the shot.

Check the geometry from both sides
- Identify the enemy that hit the Thorn rather than judging only the obstacle directly in front of the character.
- Compare the attacker's height and side angle with the intended cover.
- Check what is exposed when aiming or moving. A position protected from one lane can remain open to another.
- Move to geometry that blocks the important incoming line while preserving a useful route or shot.
- After moving, reassess the remaining enemies instead of assuming the first safe angle protects against all of them.
Use the visible result to choose a fix
| Symptom | Check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Hit from the side | The obstacle may block only the front | Choose a position covering the relevant side angle. |
| Hit from a higher floor | Look at the vertical line to the Thorn | Use taller or differently placed blocking geometry. |
| Your own shot hits cover | Trace the outgoing line to the target | Change the aim or position before spending another shot. |
| The destination is covered but the move is not | Inspect the route through the firing lane | Account for enemy reactions during movement. |
A useful position also needs a next action
Do not judge cover only by survival at the endpoint. Consider the action you intend to take afterwards: an obstructed firing line or an unaffordable reload can leave the squad unable to finish the objective.
This guide explains the physical cover rule in the reference. It does not supply a universal safe tile, a flat cover damage reduction, or a promise that every material stops every weapon.
If it does not work
- Damage still arrives: identify another attacker or angle before blaming a generic bullet bug.
- A target is visible but the muzzle line is blocked: move or choose a different target.
- A movement triggers an enemy reaction: account for the path and the enemy's current state.
- Do not apply cover advice as proof that a shield or armored objective can be damaged.
How to tell it worked
The relevant incoming bullet path is physically blocked from the checked angle, and the Thorn retains a useful route or action for the objective.
